A boom vang is used on a sailboat to pull down the boom on off-wind points of sail when the wind in the mainsail would lift the boom. proper use of a boom vang helps keep the sail full and drawing well. In sailing, a boom is a spar (pole), along the foot of a fore and aft rigged sail, that greatly improves control of the angle and shape of the sail. the primary action of the boom is to keep the foot flatter when the sail angle is away from the centerline of the boat. the boom also serves as an attachment point for more sophisticated control lines. because of the improved sail control it is. When the sail is raised, the topping lift should be adjusted to take out any slack in it while taking care to not over-tighten it. when the mainsail is reefed, the boom will rise to meet the new clew, this will also induce a lot of slack into the topping lift. once again, it should be adjusted, taking out the slack line.

sailboat boom lift Now, as you crank on the halyard, the dinghy will raise up. then you can pull on the outhaul to scoot the dinghy aft. i have found it best to also raise your boom really high up by cranking on the topping lift before you start, as this gets the boom and sails out of the way of the dinghy as you raise it up.
